film elements essay

Introduction

The fifteen-minute film extract named “Marvel One Shot- Agent Carter” provided by Mr. James develops a variety of background knowledge about what is happening behind the scenes. For example, with this video, it shows the scenes through means of the camera angels, movement, and composition, editing, sound, and mise-en scene. Each of these film elements has its own motive to help the filmmaker create purpose and meaning behind each shot. All of these contribute to the action of controlling the thoughts of the audience. This means that each of the film elements impacts the way the audience feels and responds to the outcome of the movie.

Editing

In the marvel movie Mr. James provided for me the editor added many different elements to the movie. For example, the cross cutting to create a fast pause this creates a fast-paced plot. The cut transitions also added contributed to the speed. It accomplished this by bridging scenes together. The lighting also creates definition, and it is used to intrigue and surprise the viewer. It does this by adding emphasis to the characters and the background, so the viewer does not lose their attention/lose track.

Camera shots

In the short clip of the Marvel move there was many different camera shots marvel used to develop the scenes. The close-up camera shot was used most often throughout the excerpt. Examples of this is when Peggy, had the man tied up, also when she was questioning him. This made the scene intense and showed the emotions of the character well. When Peggy and the man were arguing an over the shoulder shot was used. The viewer would expect for a serious event to go down based on how intense the scene was.

Mise en scene

Mise en scene which is the overall effect of attributes of the film elements. The characters portrayed a variety of emotions throughout the excerpt and the viewers grabbed onto it. Fear, exactment being anxious were the most common feelings. These emotions were displayed by using camera shots, lighting, and transitions, especially in important scenes the viewer stayed engaged and kept on watching.

Conclusion

While I may not know much about marvel, the filmmakers of “Marvel One shot agent carter” used a variety of film elements to make it engaging for me. Alike many other films (especially action) there were many commonly used elements to add effect to characters, emotions and the plot. I believe without these film elements “Marvel one shot agent carter” would be nothing like to what is now, and this goes for many other movies. Film elements make the viewer interpret the film a certain way and without them film would be miss read by all viewers and everyone would feel a different way about a scene without them. The techniques used in “marvel one shot agent carter” are important to many other films and are very important to the viewers emotions as well.
